The phaseout of the quantitative restrictions QRs on the automobile sector in India by 2003 will bring the sector within the ambit of a set of multilaterally agreed tariffs. The country is yet to notify to the WTO the maximum rate of duty that India would like to impose on passenger cars, two- and three-wheelers.

Korea has offered to reduce tariffs in most segments, except for complete passenger cars. Korea has proposed most significant tariff cuts in the case of two- and three-wheelers a fall of 54 percentage points from the base points. Thailand has offered tariff cuts on a wide range of products. However, their proposed post-Uruguay-Round rates are significantly higher than the comparable offers made by India.
