CHANDIGARH, April 19: Suwarcha Ppaul, the curator of Government Museum and director of the National Gallery of Portraits, died here today. Suwarcha had suffered cerebral haemorrhage 10 days back and had undergone surgery to remove the blood clot from the brain at the PGI. As she never regained consciousness, she was kept in the Intensive Care Unit on life-support system. The end came at 4.30 a.m. today when the blood pressure fell drastically and she suffered a cardiac arrest. According to Dr V.K. Khosla, head of the PGI Department of Neurosurgery, high blood pressure and hypertension had led to the sudden rupturing of an artery in the brain.

Suwarcha had been an active member of the city’s art world, the driving force behind colloquiums, carnivals and festivals of gardens. Her efforts on the restoration of frescoes and murals in the Mansa Devi Temple Complex were widely appreciated. The City Museum, the first of its kind in the country, owes its existence to the hardwork put in by her. She leaves behind her husband, a daughter and a son.
