NEW DELHI, May 8: Police are still on the lookout for Ajay Jha, the prime suspect in the murder of Niru Chanan at her house in Greater Kailash II last evening.
Ajay Jha was the only person who is known to be in the house between the time Niru8217;s husband, Ravinder left the house with a friend and the time that her body was found. Ajay, who had been living with the couple only for five days prior to the murder, is a nephew of Ravinder Jha. He has been missing since the crime was discovered.
DCP South, Amulya Patnaik said: 8220;Ajay is an adult. It is unlikely that he could have been taken out of the house by force during the evening when so many people are out on the streets.8221;
A property dispute was cited as the possible reason behind the murder but police said that other angles were being explored as well. 8220;We do not know as yet why she was murdered. We cannot assume straight away that property is the cause,8221; said Patnaik. Ravindra Jha was arrested8217; earlier this year by a team of Muzaffarnagar policemen in connection with the theft of a scooter from Khatauli in UP. He was released on bail in march from Muzaffarnagar jail.
He claimed that the arrest8217; was a ploy by powerful interests to force his wife to sign away his property. He said that while in Muzaffarnagar jail, he was told several times by fellow inmates that people were after his wife8217;s property8217;. He also claimed to recognise one of his abductors8217; as being from the Chittaranjan Park police station.
Niru Chanan8217;s parent8217;s had died last year after she married Ravinder. They reportedly received numerous offers from property dealers to buy the house. However, they refused to do so and it was then, he claims that he had begun to receive threats.
