
SGU impasse continues
Surat: Educational activity continued to be affected for the fourth day on Thursday at the South Gujarat University, with a section of students and the non-teaching staff of the university staging demonstrations in support of Ashwin Kapadia8217;s reinstatement. Teaching was further hampered with professors of different colleges on a strike to press for pay scales according to the University Grants Commission recommendations. And with a week8217;s scheduled programmes postponed indefinitely, the university will now be required to reschedule the time-table and dates of various entrance examinations.
SGCCI appeal
The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, spearheading the agitation against the SEC fare hike, has called on all citizens, industrial units, elected representatives and SEC consumers to make a strong representation of their case when a state-level team arrives here on Friday to hear peoples8217; grievances. SGCCI president Rajendra Chokhawala said in an appeal that while the citizens had shown solidarity in last month8217;s agitation, the same force was needed when the team arrived in the city tomorrow.
Office-bearers
Following resignations of some of the members of the parents ad hoc committee of the Madresah Taiyebiah High School, a meeting of Valimandal8217; met and appointed new office-bearers. According to a release, Ayaub Botawala was appointed president, while Ashok Jariwala and Chandrakant Jariwala were appointed vice-presidents. Wavoor Qureshi was appointed secretary, besides other 15 office-bearers. The statement stated that the new appointments were made because of differences among the office-bearers, while the parents were on strike recently.
Applications
The assistant employment officer of the district, in a statement issued here on Thursday, has invited applications from youth who are interested in joining the army. According to the statement, those interested should be between 16 and 21 to be eligible to apply for soldiers general and between 16 and 23 for soldier technical and nursing assistant categories. Those applying should be 167 cm tall, weight more than 50 kg and should have a chest of 77/82.
Appointed
All office-bearers of the Galaxy Youth Group, a city-based social organisation, have been appointed for the year 1998-99. According to a release issued by the group, Bimal Kulwala has been appointed president and Rajendra Lothe as the vice-president. Shamim Jariwala was appointed secretary, while Parvin Jamdar the treasurer.
Docs8217; stir off
Vadodara: With the State government agreeing to consider the 56 per cent hike in the junior doctors8217; stipend, the Junior Doctors Association JDA have called off their strike, which was scheduled to begin from August 24. A JDA spokesman said that an assurance in the context was given by State health secretary following a meeting of JDA representatives from Ahmedabad, Surat, Jamnagar and Vadodara on Thursday in Gandhinagar.
