
GPCB slaps two notices on SMC
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board has slapped two show cause notices on the Surat Municipal Corporation for discharging untreated water in Tapi.Speaking at an Open House8217; organised jointly by GPCB and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Member Secretary of the Board J M Barot today said the SMC had been directed to 8220;discharge the treated water only in the mid-sea.8221;
Joshi Dead
Nandini Joshi, a spinning-wheel activist and the elder daughter of the eminent writer late Umashankar Joshi, died here on Sunday morning after prolonged illness. She was 56. She is survived by her younger sister Swati Joshi, a professor of English in Delhi.Derailment
Rail traffic between Ahmedabad-Mumbai and Delhi-Mumbai routes was affected following derailment of a goods train near Surat on Sunday. The goods train was going to Mumbai from Surat, when a wagon No 67893 derailed on track number three near Sahara Darwaja, soon after the train left the Surat station. Authorities were forced to operate the traffic on one route only between 9 am and 3.45 p.m. The second route was opened for traffic around 3.45 but with the speed restriction of 10 km per hour, according to station manager D R Solanki. The traffic will be normalised only by Monday morning.
Water Warning
District Collector R M Shah and District Supply Officer K D Chandnani have warned petrol/diesel pump owners of strict action if they were found hoarding fuels to exploit the possible shortage in view of the damage to the Kandla Port. Shah and Chandnani held a meeting with representatives of Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Indo-Berma Petroleum and told them to ensure adequate supply to meet the demand. The officials said their was no cause for worry as the Surat district was getting most of its supply from Mumbai and only 20 to 25 per cent quota was sourced to Gujarat Refinery.
New Houses
As many as 36 houses constructed by Reliance Industries Limited at Damka village for Halpatis staying in the area were handed over to the beneficiaries. Olpad MLA Dhansukh Patel, was chief guest of the function, in which the houses constructed at a cost of Rs 12 lakh were handed over. President of RIL H S Kohli handed over the papers to Damka Sarpanch Nilaben Patel and president of HADA Action Committee Naginbhai Desai spoke on the occasion.

The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry SGCCI and Surat Telecom Department have organised jointly a seminar-cum-workshop on Importance and Need of Communication in Development of Industry and Business.8217; Experts from Department of Telecommunications and Videsh Sevasanchar Nigam Limited with the help of audio-visual aids will provide live demonstration of ISDN, video conferencing, INET and Phone-plus facilities in workshop, while the seminar topics will be ISDN, Internet and data communications.
