Jeep carrying smuggled wood seized
Range Forest Officer M L Patel South Dangs seized a jeep carrying wood worth Rs 10,000. Patel, posted at Waghai, impounded the jeep GJ 5-N 2581 which allegedly belonged to one Rajesh Gamit of Bardipada village. Forest conservator Surat circle Suresh Chand Pant has congratulated Patel for saving the wood from being smuggled from the Dangs.

Felicitated
Maharashtra Mandal, a city-based organisation, felicitated meritorious students on occasion of Independence Day. To mark the day, the Mandal also organised a patriotic song and a fancy dress competition for children. Dilip Shingne Marketing vice-president Mahindra Petrochemical Ltd who was the chief guest for the function gave away prizes to the winners of competitions. The winners were Savani Rao, Aditya Khambete, Atharv Joshi fancy dress competition, Tejswini Kulkanri, Priyanki Agashe, Priyanka Rao, Ketki Joshi, Falugni Modak, Chitra Bilgi, Suresh Pathak and Balkrishna Vadnere.

Elected
Mohammed Iqbalbhai Sheikh has been elected president of Muslim Employees8217; Welfare Society. While A A Master and Mohammed Ali Sayed have been elected vice-presidents, Sabir A Sheikh has been appointed general secretary and G M Rathod joint-secretary.

Vehicles seized
Vadodara: The VMC seized eight matadors on Thursday for evading octroi after the persons concerned lost a case in the local court. Dy Municipal Commissioner General I B Peerzada the persons concerned had moved court in 1996, when the VMC began a drive to recover octroi from vehicles that plied in the city but were registered elsewhere. Apart from 2.5 per cent of the total value of the vehicles, the DyMC said the owners would have to pay interest as well.

Superfast train
The 2963/2964 Sayajinagari Express is now running between Vadodara and Bandra Terminus as a super fast train. Superfast charges will be levied on all passengers, including season-ticket holders, from August 21.

Black day8217;
Members of the All-India Democratic Students8217; Organisation will observe a black day at the Faculty of Arts, M S University, in protest against the grant-in-aid policy introduced by the government recently. The Shikshan Bachao Samiti plans to take out a protest rally at Mangalbazaar in the same context on Friday.
