The Surat District Table Tennis Association and Sarita Sagar Sankul have organised a three-day South Gujarat Table Tennis tournament from August 27. Sponsored by Parag Sarees, the tournament will have 10 categories: men8217;s singles, women8217;s singles, under-17 boys, under-17 girls, under-14 sub-junior boys, under-12 cadet boys, men8217;s and junior boys8217; doubles, 40-plus seniors and 49-plus seniors. Interested players may contact Viraf Varachhawala, St Xavier8217;s Gymkhana, Bhulabhai Patel, LIC Mugali Sarai, before August 21.

Poll meeting
Election observers will hold a meeting with the city police and political parties at 5 pm on August 18 at the collector8217;s office to ensure 8220;free and impartial8221; polls in the Surat parliamentary constituency. The electoral officer has appealed to all political parties concerned to send their representatives to the meeting.

Gamit files papers
Seven-time Congress MP Chhitubhai Gamit filed his nomination papers for the Mandvi reserved constituency on Monday in the presence of party workers from Uchhal, Nizar, Songadh, Chikhli and Vyara. Incidentally, Gamit8217;s brother Keekubhai, 68, died of a cardiac arrest on Sunday.

Pager numbers
Police officers of the Surat Rural police department have been provided pagers to promote efficiency, an official release said. The pager number of the DySP HQ is 9622-380401, the DySP Surat div is 9622-386403, police inspector LIB is 9622-386404 and that of the circle police inspector rural is 9622-386405. DSP V M Pargi has appealed to the public to make use of the service and help the police in their job.

Sports hostel
The written examination for candidates eager to join the State government8217;s Sports Hostel under the SPDA and NSTC projects will be held in the city in 10 schools between August 24 and 31. Physical tests will be conducted at municipal school no 8/9 in the Majura Gate area at 10 am on October 6.

Donation
The Palsana Taluka Prathamik Shikshak Sangh has donated Rs 55,850 to the Chief Minister8217;s Army Welfare Fund. Sangh president B S Parmar and vice-president B B Patel said the amount would be used for the welfare of families of jawans who lost their lives in the Kargil war.
