
Woman ends life in city
Financial constraints reportedly forced a 30-year-old woman to attempt suicide by burning herself and her two-year-old son. While the woman was declared dead minutes after being admitted to the Maskati Hospital on Saturday evening, the condition of the boy was said to be serious.
Traffic drive
The traffic police has decided to target schoolchildren driving without licences once schools reopen. Only teenagers in 16-18 age group could drive vehicles with 50 CC or less capacity, the traffic police said, asking parents to take note of the proposed drive that will penalise youngsters breaking the law. The drive will also target school-rickshaws carrying more than nine children.
NIFT courses
Two courses 8212; Fashion Design and Garment Production Technology8217; and Textile Design for Apparel Fabric8217; 8212; have begun at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in the city. The NIFT sub centre at MTB College compound, the result of a joint effort of the Sarvajanik Education Society and the Ministry of Textiles, has invited students who wish to join the courses to collect admission forms and more information from the centre.
Condolences
Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari visited Dumas on Saturday to console the couple whose son, daughter-in-law and three grand-children committed mass suicide on Saturday. Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana, MLS Dheeru Gagera, Gujarat Municipal Finance Board chairman Fakirbhai Chauhan, District Collector Sangeeta Singh, Surat Municipal Commissioner S Jagadeesan, Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma accompanied the governor.

Senior journalist Amrut Badia, resident editor of Sandesh at Surat, has been selected for the Lalbhai Contractor Award, which carries Rs 10,001 in cash and a trophy, for excellence in journalism.
