DHARAMSALA, April 20: A CLASS X student from Chandigarh, Retesh Kumar, drowned today while he was bathing at a waterfall near Naddi on the outskirts of Mcleodganj with his friends. The deceased had been staying with a relative.

CHANDIGARH: THE Movement Against State Repression (MASR) today alleged that the high rate of indebtedness among Punjab farmers was forcing the poor farmers to commit suicide so as to escape indebtedness.

According to MASR convenor Inderjeet Singh Jaijee nearly 90 peasants committed suicide in about half a dozen villages of Andana and Lehra blocks of Sangrur alone during the last about four years.

He stated in a release that 26 such deaths had occured in Baleran village, 24 in Chotian, 12 in Bakhora Kalan, 10 in Chural Kalan and 15 in Banga village during this period.

The MASR has regretted the fact that these deaths have failed to move government agencies into taking necessary action so as to reduce the debt burden of the farmers in an otherwise most agriculturally advanced state of the country.

It has called upon the government and voluntary agencies and the intelligentsia to analyse the reasons behind such high suicide rate and find a solution to it.
