A 35-YEAR-OLD woman – deputy mamlatdar of Olpad taluka in Surat district – died allegedly by suicide and was found hanging at her residence on Monday, police said.

Police identified the deceased as Himisha Patel, a resident of Rander. On Monday, her husband Ketan Patel, also a deputy mamlatdar, was waiting for her to go to work together in their car. When she did not respond to knocks on the bedroom door by their domestic help, Ketan and some neighbours broke open the door. They informed the Rander police. A police team reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination.

Rander police inspector R L Chaudhary said, “The couple were earlier working as talatis and in 2023, they got promotions and were serving as deputy mamlatdar in different departments in Olpad taluka. We will record statements of family members and other relatives. No police complaint has been received in the matter. The couple has two children.”
