
CHANDIGARH, Aug 4: Teaching in the City colleges and Panjab University was affected today with teachers observing a stay-in strike. Sporting black badges, the teachers sat in dharna on the premises of their colleges, protesting over the non-acceptance of the pay-scales recommended by the University Grants Commission.
The teachers were responding to a call given by the All India Federation of College and University Teachers8217; Organisation AIFUCTO, backed by the Punjab University Teachers8217; Association PUTA and the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers8217; Union PCCTU.
Later, a rally was organised by teachers of various colleges at the Chandigarh Housing Board Chowk. Teachers from the seven non-government aided colleges of the City, government colleges, Punjab University and members of the librarian association participated in the two-hour rally. Teachers from Haryana working in government and non-government aided colleges also took part in the rally.
Later, a delegation of PCCTU and PUTA office-bearers and government college teachers submitted a memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister and the Governor. Among those who addressed the teachers included former PCCTU general secretary Charanjit Chawla, Dr S.P. Gautam of PUTA, former PUTA chief Dr P.P. Arya and R.N. Sharma, PCCTU Chandigarh president.
