A prominent member of Surrey’s Punjabi community was shot and killed in broad daylight on Tuesday, prompting a major homicide investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

The victim has been identified by community and investigative sources as Binder Garcha, a 48-year-old businessman known as the owner of Studio 12 Banquet Hall. Community members have described Garcha as a kind, respectful, and gentle person. Police have not yet officially confirmed the victim’s identity, as is standard pending notification of next of kin and further investigation.

The shooting occurred near Ghuman Farms in a rural area around 176 Street and 35 Avenue. Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers were called to the scene just before noon on January 13 after reports of a man lying on the ground. Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple police units secured the property with yellow tape, and a heavy police presence remained into the evening. A burned vehicle was later discovered nearby in South Surrey, which investigators believe is connected to the homicide.

IHIT has taken conduct of the investigation. No motive has been publicly disclosed, and no suspects have been named. Authorities are appealing for dashcam footage or witness information from the area between approximately 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The killing has sparked outrage in the community, with calls for greater public safety and action against rising violence. “Surrey deserves safety and real action,” one local voice stated on social media, reflecting widespread shock and grief.

The investigation remains ongoing, with updates expected as more details become available. The public is advised to continue avoiding the area.
