Blue Tongue disease hits livestock industry
NEW DELHI: A recent outbreak of Blue Tongue BT, one of the most feared viral diseases of sheep, has claimed more than 10,000 sheep in the last three months in South India, report scientists from the Haryana Agricultural University HAU in Hisar.Blue tongue virus, transmitted by an insect, is endemic to India and has been causing heavy losses annually.

However, this year8217;s damage has been the worst. The disease caused losses to the tune of several crores in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

These losses were due to deaths of the blue tongue-affected goats, sheep and buffaloes. Animals severely affected by BT have high fever, swelling of tongue and lips, salivation and frothing and haemorrhage in the mouth.

Three girls washed away in river
BIJAPUR:
Three teenaged girls were washed away in Ghataprabha river at Sangandi village in Karnataka8217;s Bijapur district on Saturday evening, police said. Police said the victims were washing clothes when the tragedy occurred.

19 killed as bus plunges into stream
KOTTARAKKARA:
Nineteen people, including five women and two children, were drowned and 64 injured when a private bus fell into a stream off a bridge at Kalladakanni in Chadayamangalam near here today.

Police said the driver of the bus lost control as it skidded off the road before plunging into the stream. The injured, some of them seriously, had been brought to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital, they said.

Minor quake in Chamba
SHIMLA:
Chamba town and itsadjoining areas were rocked by an earthquake which lasted few seconds, early this morning.However, there was no report of any loss of life or damage to property due to the quake. Details are awaited.
