ANNECY FRANCE, Aug 2: Christian Malcolm showed that he might be the man to fill the void in British sprinting left by the retirement of Linford Christie.

Malcolm, 19, won the 200 metres in a Championship best of 20.44 seconds after starting his gold medal collection with a 100 metres victory on Wednesday.

The eight-man field were all in contention at the halfway point but the long-striding Malcolm pulled comfortably clear a the line drew nearer.

On a day when the cloud of controversy over China8217;s presence at the championships was lifted with the French customs authority8217;s declaration that the substance confiscated last weekend had proved to be innocuous, the country added two more gold medals to its impressive women8217;s tally.

Fengying Liu won the women8217;s discus with 60.66 metres while Shengfei Shen took the heptathlon title with 5,815 points.

Adil El Kaouch broke the Kenyan stranglehold on the men8217;s distance events today, winning Morocco8217;s first ever gold at the World Junior Championships when hetriumphed in the 1,500 metres.

The 19-year-old Kaouch is a protege of Moroccan 1500m world record holder Hicham El-Guerrouji.

The Championships also ended with the unlikely result of the American men returning without a gold medal as Australia8217;s 4215;400 metres team imposed the first ever defeat on the United States since 1986.
