Bunty Aur Babli, Yash Raj Music

AFTER some massive hits for Kal Ho Naa Ho, which are still hot on club lists, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s score for Bunty Aur Babli pales a little in comparison.

Okay, so the milieu is different. It’s a Mills & Booner about small-town bummers, not a modern love story set in the Big Apple. But the trio has managed to push in a hip-hop version of the title track, where Bollywood’s fave rapper Blaaze recites the duo’s love story.

Even though the folksy opening track Dhadak Dhadak has a catchy jingle-like sound, there’s no instant attraction. The track grows on you.

In the bhangra pop Nach Baliye, you instantly notice that Jaspinder Narula is straining at the highs. Also, the song lacks the energy of It’s The Time To Disco, though it’s obviously been scored for the dance floor.

Narula makes up in the pacy title track, with Sukhwinder Singh.

We have to cut these composers some slack—they’ve made

Alisha Chinoy sound better than she ever has in a pop ditty and resurrected Narula. Kajra Re is the show-stopper—a qawwali where Baby Doll turns out to be the big surprise.

The entire album is charming enough, with classic Gulzar lines like Thoda sa badal chakhna hai.
