Chandigarh, Aug 10: The dharna by activists of the Students8217; Organisation of Panjab University outside the office of the Vice-Chancellor entered its sixth day today. Various students8217; organisations, including SOPU, have been demanding provisional promotion for all science students who have been denied admission due to the implementation of a new set of rules.
According to the rules, BSc Hons I students need to clear 24 credits for promotion to Part II and BSc II students need 56 credits for getting promoted to BSc III.
Reena Rai, SOPU academic convenor, said while earlier, only 60 credits were required for promotion to MSc from BSc Hons, now the rules state that a candidate complete 120 credits before he can be promoted to MSc. She said the reappear exams scheduled for earlier this year have not been held so far, thus the authorities had denied the students a chance to clear their papers.
On the other hand, the PUSU and the HSA have contended that the students had sought admission to the courses as five-year integrated programmes and that the new rules should come into force for the new admissions. Meanwhile, the VC has constituted a committee, which will meet on Wednesday, to look into the matter.
