Sonia Gandhi was elected Congress president once more on Saturday. Congress Election Authority Chairman Oscar Fernandes, who oversaw the exercise, declared the result.
While PM Manmohan Singh, who proposed her name for the presidency on May 25, was not around, most Cabinet ministers and senior leaders were present. Sonia, in her brief address, told party leaders not to rest on the laurels and appealed them to be more active than before.
In contrast to the presidential election, the proposed AICC reshuffle has generated immense speculation. As Rahul Gandhi is expected to lead Congress in the next Lok Sabha polls, it is time he be drafted for party work as a General Secretary, like his father.
Sonia’s election would be ratified at the plenary session. There are already indications of her opting for elections in order to fill 10 seats in the CWC rather than nominating the apex decision-making body.
