Going global
The Rotary Club of Pune Metro organised an International Youth Exchange IYE presentation programme in association with the Rotary Club of Poona Midtown, Rotary Club of Pune Uptown and Rotary Club of Poona Riverside. The programme was held at the Amphitheatre, Fergusson College on January 21. The IYE is one of the club8217;s most cherished international service projects. The aim is to promote international understanding and peace in the world. The exchange is for one year in which the student is given ample opportunity to learn about the host country. This year there is a group of 20 students visiting the country.

Republic day observed
Republic Day was observed by the members of the Albert Edward Institute and Cowasjee Dinshaw Hall and Library on January 26. Darayus Mody, trustee, unfurled the national flag at the function. The function was also attended by T S Pariani, president and R D Gawali, general secretary of the organisation.

Bugged by Y2K?
Aptech Dehu Road conducted a seminar recently to appraise the students and the general public of the problems raised by the Year 2000 bug aka Y2K. The seminar was conducted by N Rajesh in his capacity as the faculty leader. As the seminar has proved to be a success, another seminar will be held on February 5 on the premises of APTECH, Dehu Road. Admission is free and registrations and enquiries can be made on telephone at 884525 on or before February 3.

Discovering the city
The students and teachers of the Rewachand Bhojwani Academy RBA have embarked on a significant and comprehensive study of the city that will cover all socio-historical and religious aspects. At the academy, the children are working towards an exhibition that covers various topics such as family, school, neighbourhood, followed by the railway station, places of worship, Pune under Shivaji and under the Peshwas, British monuments and the scientific and educational institutions in the city. The project has already involved visits to places of historical interest, visits by several historians and experts and interviews with people with diverse interests. In this regard a major event has also been planned that will include cultural performances as well as a kavi sammelan by child poets in Marathi. All this comes up on February 16, 17 and 19, marking RBA8217;s fourth anniversary.

Promoting Indian arts
The Rotary Club of Nigdi-Pune is organising a cultural programme aimed at promoting traditional Indian performing arts. Sawani Shende will give a performance of vocal Hindustani classical music and Shweta Kallianpurkar will present a Bharatnatyam recital. The programme will be held on February 6 at 9.00 pm at the PCMC auditorium, opposite Chinchwad Telco.

Annual celebrations
Havyaka, Pune, organised their annual gathering at the BAIF premises in Varje in the city on Republic Day. Highlights of the programme were a Hindustani music Vocal performance by Sandhya R Hegde and a break dance by Abhijit Hegde. K S Hegde was felicitated for being awarded Kannada Kulbhushana8217;. He is the academic secretary of languages and miscellaneous subjects at the Maharashtra State Bureau of Text books, Curricular and Research, Bal Bharati, Pune. Meritorious students were also felicitated.
