Ten-year-old Harshvardhan Waghmare climbed a building to save an infant

On Nov 14, when Jayanand Shetty left home to request his neighbour for some hot water for his infant son8217;s baby food, little did he know what lay in store for him. A strong gust of wind shut the main door as he left, activating the automatic lock system and locking his 22-month-old son Aditya inside.

The afternoon of Children8217;s Day at Shetty8217;s residence D1/5, Windsor Estate, Ramwadi seemed jinxed for him. With his son locked inside the house and no way of getting in, Shetty was desperate for a solution. 8220;I never expected something like this to happen. Since it wasn8217;t a planned exit from home, I left the keys inside. For the first 15 minutes, I could hear Aditya wailing. Gradually, that too subsided and it was even scarier. I frantically tried fitting in keys from other houses but all in vain,8221; he says.

It was when Shetty had lost all hope that Harshawardhan Waghmare, a 10-year-old offered to be of help. 8220;Aditya had been locked up for more than half-an-hour and everyone was discussing what to do next. I thought I could go in through the small opening in the living room window and unlock the door,8221; says Harshvardhan.

The little braveheart readily climbed the stairs to be at level with the window of the living room and squeezed his way in through a congested 11215;6 inch opening in it. As everyone gathered there held their breath, Harshavardhan made his way inside and opened the door, to let Shetty in.

8220;For a 10-year-old to climb those stairs and push through such a congested space was impossible. Though I was naturally worried for my son locked inside, I was worried for Harshvardhan too. He could have easily slipped and fallen or gotten bruised while squeezing through that space,8221; says Shetty.

The brave act has won admirers to Harshvardhan and done his family proud. His mother Amrapali Waghmare says she8217;s proud of her son. 8220;When I explained the situation to him, he just looked at me and said he would go in through that space. I am happy that my son has basic humanitarian values in plac ,8221; says she.
