The Smithsonian Institution is among the world best museums and databases in the world. From the history of the world to the future of mankind. The institution is also leading the changes in Internet technology. In association with Computer World, Smithsonian funds awards for breakthroughs in Internet technology.

Called the Innovation Awards, these have been given for lifetime achievement, breaking boundaries and for breakthroughs in new products. One lifetime achievement award was given to the person who helped develop Ethernet.

The awards were established in 1989 and have been sponosred by some of the leading infotech companies. The lists of finalists and their work can also be accessed at innovate.si.edu.
