MUMBAI, June 24: Select pivotals led by Reliance, HDFC, Mahindra and others remained better on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today on speculative support coupled with buying by foreign institutional investors. The Sensex gained 30 points.

After a steady spell, share prices generally moved widely. The closing rates showed widespread small to modest gains. The volume of business recovered. The BSE sensitive index opened at 4088.96 touched the day’s high of 4121.93 and a low of 4063.19 before closing at 4119.39, showing a modest gain of 30.19 points compared to the previous level of 4089.20. The BSE-100 Index gained 12.04 points to 1771.25 from the previous level of 1759.21.

Brokers said the sentiment turned better on renewed buying support FIIs and reported fresh buying extended by the company’s circle in Reliance counter.

The FIIs have purchased considerable number of Mahindra and Mahindra, HDFC, Hindustan Lever, G E Shipping and others.

However, the operators said the present political situation arising out of the chargesheet filed by the CBI against the Bihar Chief Minister, Laloo Prasad Yadav and others in the Rs 950 crore Fodder scam, and Yadav’s refusal to step down as the chief minister coupled with fresh rumours of his arrest had affected the volume of business.The bonus ratio to be announced by Reliance on June 26 would be the deciding factor for the future market trend.

Reliance remained the most active scrip with a turnover of Rs 264.02 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 880.83 crore followed by ITC of Rs 100.40 crore, Telco of Rs 87.30 crore, SBI of Rs 73.69 crore and Tata Steel of Rs 2.52 crore.

Reliance advanced further by Rs 7.50 to Rs 374.50 on speculative support. Telco gained Rs 4 at Rs 460.25, SBI Rs 1.50 at Rs 341.25 and ITC Rs steel eased by a rupee to 191.25 and telco by 4 to 460.25. Mahindra and Mahindra gained Rs 36 at Rs 451.75, ACC Rs 87 at Rs 1322, HDFC Rs 233.25 at Rs 3879.25 and Indian Hotels Rs 15.25 at Rs 638. Bajaj Auto, Glaxo, Finloex Cables, Grasim, Tata Chemicals, Hero Honda and MTNL also remained better.

However,Tata Steel, BHEL, Gujarat A Cement, Esab India, Pond’s, Raymond, MRF and Hindalco closed subdued.

On the National Stock Exchange (NSE) a mixed trend was witnessed as equity prices fluctuated on both buying and selling bouts. NSE-50 index opened at 1154.95 points, registered day’s high of 1161.95 points, low of 1146.85 points before closing at 1155.30 points as against the previous close of 1153.70 points, showing a gain of 1.60 points.

The Midcap index declined by 10.05 points to 1175.45 points as compared to last trading day’s close of 1185.50 points. The total turnover on NSE was Rs 1499.86 crore.
