Guwahati, April 20: The semi-finalists from Group II in the 54th Santosh Trophy will be decided under floodlights tomorrow. Maharashtra and Kerala play the first match while defending champions Bengal meet Railways under the lights in the last Group II quarter-final league match. The equations are quite clear.
If Maharashtra manage to hold Kerala, and Bengal also play a draw against Railways, both of them are through. If Kerala beat Maharashtra, the southern team is through.
However, things will be simplest if Bengal win. In that case, the defending champions are through to semis, making it easy for the other spot too.
Railways too are in with a chance, if they manage to defeat Bengal by a 4-0 margin, a unlikely happening going by the forms displayed so far in this tournament.
Bengal, who defeated Maharashtra in their first match, were, however, held by Kerala. They will definitely strengthen their defence tomorrow as they would not want to concede even a single goal. Bengal will miss their captainSatyajit Chatterjee who has already picked up two bookings. However, Bibhas Bhosh will be back at the goal again, having served his suspension for the red card offence against Maharashtra. With Prashanta Dora doing a good job under the bar, coach Sudip Chaterjee will have a tough task in picking his goalkeeper tomorrow.
Maharahstra too will fall back on their defence against Kerala tomorrow. The southern state has not scored any goal in the quarter-final league so far.
Both their matches ended in goalless draws. With skipper V P Shaji as their only potential scorer, going by the team8217;s performance so far, they will have to do some homework before taking on Maharashtra tomorrow. Of course, Maharashtra under the tactful Bimal Ghosh, will look for opportunities through counter-attack to make the issue safe as early as possible.
