CHANDIGARH, Aug 14: Keeping in view the Janamashtami celebrations coinciding with the eve of the Independence Day and the increased threat perception from militants, the police have made elaborate security arrangements in the City.
In all, 113 check-posts 8212; one outside each temple 8212; have been set up in the City. While the Crime Branch Operations CBO Cell has also set up 10 check-posts, the nine entry points to the City have been sealed from 6 p.m. this evening, according to police sources. Suspected hideouts of militants were also raided in the past week but no arrests were made. However, about 20-odd quot;suspicious elementsquot; were rounded up from different parts of the City and interrogated to verify their antecedents, it was added.
quot;We have received intelligence inputs that militants are planning strikes in the City. Since a lot of temples today are crowded, these are being viewed as the most vulnerable points, particularly because the Jamp;K militants have been pumped in from across the border to create disturbances and it suits them very well to strike at temples, quot; an official said.
The checking outside temples will carry on till the wee hours of Saturday morning, sources said. Anti-sabotage checks have also been carried out in all religious places, venues for various functions to be held tomorrow and armed spotters of the Chandigarh Police have been deployed at public places, sources add. Additional forces from the MPSAF and IRB have been deployed in various parts of the City, sources said.
