The Supreme Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to hand over the trial records pertaining to two cases of disproportionate assets against CM J. Jayalalithaa to a Bangalore court within a week. This order was passed by a bench comprising Justice S.N. Variava and Justice H.K. Sema on a plea filed by DMK leader K. Anbazaghan alleging that though the apex court transferred trial of the two cases against her from Chennai to Bangalore on November 18, 2003, trial is yet to commence.Taking exception to the manner in which the trial was proceeding in Chennai, the SC had transferred the cases to Bangalore and on February 17, dismissed Jayalalithaa’s plea for transfer of the trial of the two cases from Karnataka to any other neighbouring state. The Court directed the special court to depute a senior official who would go to Chennai to collect the papers and directed TN and Karnataka to provide police protection for the transportation of the court records. Jayalalithaa had requested the Court to reconsider its decision to transfer the trial from Karnataka, saying local sentiments against her were hostile due to the ongoing dispute over Cauvery water.
