An 11-year-old tribal girl was found dead five days after she went missing in Chhattisgarh’s Abujhmad on Sunday, with police suspecting she had been sexually assaulted and murdered.

Superintendent of Police for Narayanpur district Robinson Guria said the suspect, a 22-year-old tribal man from the same village, has been arrested.

According to the police, the victim, who belonged to one of Chhattisgarh’s most vulnerable tribes, went missing on December 21 but her family didn’t approach the police, instead taking the assistance of village residents to organise search parties.

Her body was found on January 4, and the police were alerted, with a post-mortem report allegedly showing that she had been sexually assaulted and that she bore injuries to her head.

The police sent her body for a post-mortem to the district hospital, and a forensic team visited the crime spot.
