KM Beenamol still nurses faint memories of former coach Purushottaman making her run on the Kerala beaches. Today, she is reliving those happy decade-old memories as part of the sand-training exercise that has been included for the first time in Indian athletics8217; Olympic preparatory programme.

The 800m gold and 400m silver medalist at the Busan Asian Games, Beenamol is a member of India8217;s Olympic-bound team of sprinters and middle-distance runners. The team comes here thrice a week to undergo training in the second phase of the programme, which is being held at the Sports Authority of India centre in Kandivali.

8216;8216;I remember running on the beaches when I was mastering the basics under Purushottaman,8217;8217; she said, speaking to The Indian Express this morning. 8216;8216;I can tell you that sand training will definitely help all of us improve our techniques, endurance and timings,8217;8217; Beenamol said, relaxing in the cool morning sea breeze.

The 2003 joint Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna winner also informs us that 400m is not going to be her event this time. 8216;8216;I am preparing only for the 800m,8217;8217; she said. The chief coach hints she might run the relay as well. 8216;8216;My top priority is to train mentally and physically first. I8217;ve set no specific targets as of now,8217;8217; she signs off.

The one-month camp is designed to mark a palpable difference in the athletes8217; stride lengths. Russian coach Yuri Odoronic, who is supervising the programme, feels the result will be seen in the lower limbs, which will be markedly stronger. 8216;8216;The frequency of strides have increased but their length has to be improved so that the numbers are brought down,8217;8217; he explained.
