
NEW DELHI, November 16: Rock Rovers Chandigarh overcame Tata XI 3-2 to remain in contention for the Super League while SAIL routed Tamil Nadu XI 4-0 in the preliminary league match of the 35th Senior Nehru hockey tournament at the National Stadium here today.
In another match, Gabbar Singh scored in the 62nd minute to help Hawks Club Punjab beat Karnataka XI 1-0.
In a fast-paced encounter, Rock Rovers8217; Navdeep Singh put his side ahead in the 21st minute after converting a penalty stroke. But a counter move in the very next minute fetched Tata XI the equaliser through Enrico Fernandes. Six minutes before the break Inderjit Singh again put Rock Rovers ahead when he converted a penalty corner. In the 56th minute, Jasmeet Singh increased the lead to 3-1.
In the 59th minute Claeas Ferreira reduced the margin for the Tata XI but after that Rock Rovers concentrated on defense and held on to the lead.
SAIL scored two goals in each half to drub Tamil Nadu 4-0. Prakash Chalke gave SAIL the lead in the fourth minute while Cyril Ekka scored the second goal in the 19th minute. After the interval, Prakash Chalke scored his second and the team8217;s third goal and Aslam Khan completed the tally in the 57th minute.
