Even as the Treasury Benches and the Opposition wrestled over the office of profit Bill, the only MP to have ever been disqualified by the President for holding such an office re-entered the Rajya Sabha today.
Jaya Bachchan came to take the oath with husband Amitabh Bachchan and Samajwadi Party colleague Amar Singh in tow. While Amitabh was immediately mobbed by autograph seekers tele-journos and parliamentary staff, wife Jaya explained her re-entry into the Upper House with a proverb: 8216;8216;Ja ke rakho saiyaan mar sake na koi.8217;8217; No harm can come to the one who has god as saviour.
Her remark was seen as a dig at the Congress, which allegedly failed to back Amitabh after he resigned from the Lok Sabh over the Bofors controversy during the Rajiv Gandhi government.
8226; LEFT ON OoP Bill:
The Left, meanwhile, has decided that Parliament being supreme, the Bill should be passed in the present form while a committee could be set up to go into the wider aspects of the office of profit issue. This was decided at a meeting of the Parliamentary parties of the four Left parties, the CPIM, CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc. The Left added that Parliament ought to send back the Bill to the President for his assent.
