NEW DELHI, JUNE 17: A retired octogenarian Army Major was found dead in his Defence Colony residence early this morning. Major retd Harish Chand Malik, 82, was discovered dead by his niece at their D-229 residence, lying on the floor with injuries on the temple. A broken glass bottle was recovered from the scene. The police have found no evidence of a forcible entry or that the house was ransacked though the wardrobe in the Major8217;s room was open.

So, though a murder case was registered, police are not ruling out an accident. The body was discovered around 7:00 a.m. when Neelam Vishal, the Major8217;s niece, came to the houses8217; ground floor. The Major was staying there alone for the last eight months. When Neelam tried to open the door, she found it was bolted.

Neighbours broke open the door to find the body on the floor with blood on the face. The back door in the kitchen was found open and it could have been an entry point for a murderer. But, Neelam said she had bolted all doors. Fingerprints from the bottle and the connecting door latch were lifted. Sources, however, point to property being be a motive for the murder as the Major did not have any offsprings. If it is assumed that the Major was murdered, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sudhir Yadav, says it may not be the job of a professional. For a professional would have come prepared with a murder weapon and not used the bottle.

Yadav also added that the probability that the Major had fallen in his sleep and hurt himself with the bottle could not be ruled out. This would be determined only when the medical report was available, he said.

Neelam said her uncle was 8220;relatively fit8221; and even used to drive but had some problems with his left leg which made him fall at times.
