PATIALA: The Ghagga police have nabbed one Manga Ram of Khanauri village and have seized 140 kg of poppy husk from him. According to the sources, he had smuggled the poppy husk from Haryana. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

LUDHIANA: District Magistrate Arun Goel has prohibited plying of all public transport vehicles including tourist buses without proper escort or security from 10 pm to 4 am in the district and has warned the public not to travel in such vehicles. In separate orders, he has directed all the house owners, traders and factory owners to provide full particulars of their tenants and employees to concerned police stations.
PATIALA: Members of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha have demanded that all the class IV posts in the state government offices, universities, boards and corporations should be filled by domicile residents of Punjab. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, they have alleged that the officials were recruiting outsiders against these posts to serve their personal motives. They sought an immediate ban on recruitment of these outsiders.

LUDHIANA: The Ludhiana Citizens Council, in collaboration with Elf Lubricants, will organise a campaign to promote licensed driving in the city from April 21 to 23. According to LCC president Agyapaul Singh, the council members and city traffic police would educate the people on safe driving. Licensed drivers, chosen at random would receive gifts from Elf Lubricants.

LUDHIANA: Punjab Youth Congress yesterday criticised the Akali Dal-BJP government, charging it with the failure to safeguard the interests of farmers and total inaction on pending issues. PYC joint secretary Ishwarjot Singh Cheema said that the purchase price of wheat at Rs 510 per quintal was a cruel joke with the farming community and demanded a minimum support price of Rs 650.
FATEHGARH SAHIB: Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar working committee member Ravinder Pal Singh Bagli has said that Gurcharan Singh Tohra should immediately step-down as the SGPC chief for having sort the support of the Nirankaris during the Lok Sabha elections, saying that Tohra was not above the dictates of the Akal Takht.

FATEHGARH SAHIB: The elections of the zila parishad, gram panchayats and panchayat samiti would be held by June 30 this year. The government has issued a formal notification in this regard. This was disclosed here on Thursday by an official spokesman.
113 procurement mandis setup
GURDASPUR : With the opening of 56 more mandis, the total number of mandis for wheat procurement in district Gurdaspur has gone up to 113. Deputy Commissioner Ravneet Kaur said here yesterday that last year only 74 Mandis were opened. The Deputy Commissioner said that no wheat had arrived in the mandis of the district as yet.
Attariwala8217;s statue to be installed
AMRITSAR: Amarjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner Amritsar yesterday said in a meeting that there was a plan to erect a statue of Sham Singh Attariwala at the Gate Way of India. Deputy Commissioner also instructed the Forest Department officials to do the landscaping of the site.
