CHANDIGARH, Dec 1: Nearly 1,500 references of re-evaluation at Panjab University had to be sent to a third examiner following a substantial hike in their marks. Data compiled by the university shows that the marks allotted by the university during the regular examination and the re-evaluation differed by nearly 12 per cent of the cases.

University rules specify that in case the marks granted by the two examiners differ by over 15 per cent, they have to be sent to the third person for further examination. Under this rule, 30 per cent of all the final year re-evaluation cases of B.Com had to be sent to a third examiner for rechecking. Data reveals a wide variance of marks being granted to students by different examiners. This assumes significance in light of the case reported in the university where a student who had zero marks in the examination was granted 42 marks after re-evaluation.

An official press statement of the university today stated that they were being prompt in declaring the result, and blamed the students for the delay. While claiming that rate of timely declaration of re-evaluation results ranged from 60 to 80 per cent, the university conceded that the result of nearly 3,400 students who had applied for re-evaluation in the first batch of applicants could not be declared by September.

This included nearly 900 cases each of B.A./B.Sc first and final year and nearly 700 students of B.A. second year. The results of 221 students B.Com I 19 per cent, 316 of B.Com II 27.5 per cent, and 392 out of 1,000 of B.Com III 39 per cent, could not be declared by September, according to the data provided by the university.
