NAGPUR, OCT 24: In a gruesome incident, a rape suspect was done to death by the relatives of the rape victim at Ramtek on Saturday night.
Ravindra Bhovaji Ambade (30), is alleged to have been set on fire by Gopichand Arjun Ambade and seven others on Saturday night. The assailants tied Ravindra’s hands and feet before pouring kerosene over his body and setting it on fire. Although there were a large number of people watching the gruesome incident, none came forward to Ravindra’s help, the Ramtek police said.
By the time police reached there, Ravindra was badly burnt and had breathed his last. The Ramtek police have arrested Gopichand, Nitin Bhisare (18), Ashok Ambade (30), Kishore Ambade (28), Sanjay Ambade (32), Deobhan Ambade (25), Sanju Ambade (31) and one more person. They were produced in court on Monday and have since been remanded to police custody.
According to the police, the victim — Ravindra was the first cousin of Gopichand Ambade and the other members of the Ambade clan, suspected to be involved in the murder. Ravindra and Gopichand stay side by side in Ward No 3 at Ramtek. Ravindra was lodged in jail for the past few days in connection with the rape of Gopichand’s wife. He was released from prison two days ago, police said.
Gopichand and his brothers, who were hell bent on taking revenge for the rape, picked a quarrel with the latter on Saturday night, when Ravindra came out of the house after having dinner. The entire clan of the Ambades led by Gopichand was present at that time.
According to Ramtek police, it took no time for the quarrel to escalate into a heated argument, following which Gopichand and others attacked Ravindra and beat him black and blue. Ravindra’s mother Satyafula, who tried to interfere, was also not spared and bore the ire of the Ambade family members.
While, Gopichand tied the hands and feet of Ravindra, the others poured the kerosene over him and later set him on fire.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (Kamptee Division) Dilip Bhujbal visited the spot on Saturday night. Later, seven members were arrested from the village.
