
Nagaland candidate feared killed
KOHIMA: Lok Shakti candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland, Akhei Achumi, was feared killed after he was reported missing since yesterday. Official sources said an unsigned note was received by his family in Dimapur this evening saying Achumi who had earlier announced his quot;retirementquot; from the fray, quot;has been executedquot;. The police have launched a massive search operation, but Achumi8217;s body is yet to be traced.
Quake in State
NEW DELHI: A moderate tremor rocked Koyna region of Maharashtra this morning, a meteorological department release said here. The quot;slightquot; tremor measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale occurred at 0833 hours, the release said, adding no damage was reported. A moderate tremor measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Nepal-Tibet border region at 0811 hours, the release added.
Cambodians flee
BANGKOK: About 1,500 Cambodian civilians fled into Thailand today as fighting flared betweenOpposition fighters and government troops under leader Hun Sen, Thai military sources said. The refugees fled a clash near the contested north-west Cambodian village of D8217;Baichon. About 100 Govt soldiers launched a pre-dawn attack on troops loyal to deposed co-premier, Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
Ajmer bandh
JAIPUR: Normal life was paralysed in Ajmer today as the city observed a quot;total bandhquot; called by Ajaimeru Raksha Samiti in protest against communal clashes in which about 60 persons have been injured since Feb 17. All business establishments remained closed and the public transportation was off the road. The curfew continued for the 5th day today as a preventive measure.
Assam firing
GUWAHATI: The Assam government today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the firing of bullets from the weapon of a senior police officer8217;s security personnel here yesterday. Two women were quot;accidentallyquot; injured when the bodyguard fired at a suspected ULFA youth. Sources are,however, tight-lipped about the identity of the police officer.
