Bharat Ratna for Nobel laureate Amartya Sen

NEW DELHI: Nobel prize winner Amartya Sen has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour. The decision was taken by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today, official sources announced. The economist, who is master of Trinity College, won the Nobel prize for Welfare Economics in 1998. Mother Teresa is the other Nobel prize winner who was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna. Missile scientist Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, the brain behind the second Pokhran nuclear blasts, was the other non-politician to be conferred the Bharat Ratna by the Vajpayee Government.

Romesh Sharma charged

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation CBI today filed a charge sheet in a Delhi court against Dawood aide Romesh Sharma and his nine associates in a case of appropriating a helicopter which belonged to a Mumbai businessman but was kept under captivity by Sharma.

HC rejects plea in Bhagwat case

MUMBAI: Mumbai HighCourt today rejected a petition that sought a direction to the Centre to disclose in public interest the grounds on which former Navy chief Vishnu Bhagwat was sacked. Acting Chief Justice A C Agarwal and Justice Ajit Shah ruled that the petitioner, Lt. Gen. retd. Premnath Hoon had no locus standi to seek the material on the basis of which Bhagwat was dismissed.

Fodder scam case

PATNA: The special designated CBI court of S K Lal today fixed February 2 for the appearance of former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav and other accused in the fodder scam case.

Besides Yadav, former Union minister Chandradeo Prasad Verma, former Bihar minister Vidya Sagar Nishad and RJD legislator R K Rana also appeared before the court.
