Three-fold increase in judges8217; pay

NEW DELHI: A legislation seeking to amend the conditions of services of High Court and Supreme Court judges to enhance their salaries with effect from January one, 1996 was approved by the Lok Sabha on Saturday. The salary of the Chief Justice of India will be increased to Rs 33,000 per month from Rs 10,000 and judges of the Supreme Court will now get Rs 30,000 instead of Rs 9,000. The Chief Justice of a High Court will get Rs 30,000 instead of Rs 9,000 and judges of the High Court will get Rs 26,000 instead of Rs 8,000.

Bomb attack

HYDERABAD: A Congress activist was killed in a bomb attack allegedly by workers of the ruling Telugu Desam Party at Velugodu village in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. A faction feud was the cause for the attack, police said here.

Turkey quakeISTANBUL: A tremor shook southern Turkey on Saturday, injuring several hundred people, officials said. The quake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, struck anarea where at least 140 people died in an earthquake last weekend. Today8217;s injuries were mostly minor, the officials said.
