A CBI court has delivered its verdict in a 15-year-old murder case from Baliali village in the Kharar area, holding Dilbar Singh, brother of former sarpanch Kulwant Singh, guilty. The court convicted him under Section 304 of the IPC and sentenced him to eight years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 25,000.

The incident dates back to December 2010, when a dispute over parking a vehicle escalated into a violent clash in Baliali village. Firing took place from both sides during the altercation. Rattan Singh died after being hit by a bullet, while members of Kulwant Singh and Dilbar Singh’s family suffered injuries.

During the trial, the court established that Dilbar Singh played a criminal role in the incident. However, former sarpanch Kulwant Singh, Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh ‘Jitti’ Sidhu, and Jatinder Singh were acquitted of murder charges due to a lack of evidence.

The court also took into account that Dilbar Singh has already spent around six-and-a-half years in judicial custody and ordered him to undergo the remaining sentence.

Mayor already acquitted

Earlier, during the proceedings, Mohali’s sitting Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu, was acquitted as he was found to be out of town on the day of the incident, and no evidence linked him to the crime. Sidhu is the younger brother of a former Congress MLA and Health Minister. The court observed that the case stemmed from an internal family dispute, bringing closure to a long-pending and contentious matter in the region.
