IA likely to make profits after a decade

CALCUTTA: Indian Airlines is likely to make a net profit of Rs 40 crore at the end of 1997-98, an achievement nearly after a decade, according to Airlines8217; director commercial, Manet Paes. After a meeting on strengthening IA8217;s marketing strategy with senior officials in the regional headquarters here, Paes told a press conference that the projected yield per passenger at Rs 3,500 has gone up to Rs 3,850, a rise by 10 per cent, indicating the success to be achieved in the current financial year. Last year, the Airlines incurred a loss of Rs 12 crore and the year before, the loss was Rs 240 crore. The figure stood at Rs 255 crore three years back, he said.

Wheat allocation

NEW DELHI: The Centre has made an additional 1.88 lakh tonnes allocation of wheat to various states under the Targeted Public Distribution System TPDS as a measure to curb the spurt in foodgrain prices, said a top union food and civil supplies ministry official on Monday.

Postal strike

NEW DELHI: Postal services across the country were severely affected on Monday as about five lakh employees went on a day8217;s token strike called by 14 unions to press for various demands. The impact was less in Maharashtra, Orissa, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. The unions, seven each under the Federation of National Postal Organisations and National Federation of Postal Employees, are pressing for the implementation of the Justice Charanjit Talwar Committee recommendations for 3.5 lakh extra-departmental employees.
