
11 PUC centres get show-cause
The Regional Transport Office has issued show-cause notices to 11 pollution under control PUC centres for 8220;irregularities8221; that included miscalibration, expiry of authorisation and non-renewal of licences in the ongoing PUC drive.
As many as 8313 vehicles have been checked in the drive covering Pune andPimpri-Chinchwad between November 26 and 30. Of these, 1165 have been booked and challaned for causing pollution, declared regional tranport officer U S Alsi at a press conference held on Tuesday evening.
Of the 42 PUC centres checked during the drive, 11 have been found with irregularities, added J T Nagrani, deputy transport commissioner. 8220;Some of the PUC centres have been issuing fake licences without doing the corresponding checks and they will be prosecuted under the Motor Vehicles Act. The action taken can include suspension and cancellation of their licenses,8221; he said.
Of the 12 petrol pumps checked, samples have been taken in two cases where some anomaly was seen in the fuel density. 8220;It is only after the samples are checked in the laboratories that a conclusion will be arrived at,8221; Alsi said. The RTO, which faces an acute shortage of staff, has put off issue of learners and drivers licences till December 5 to get more of their staff onto the nine squads that have been conducting pollution checks.
Altogether 50 officers and other staff are on the squads conducting pollution checks during the drive that will end on December 3.
