SURAT, July 4: Police Sub-Inspector Narendra Ambikaprasad Jha of the Chowk Bazaar police station was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB on Saturday night while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2000 from a bus-owner.
According to an ACB release, Jha was arrested red-handed, from Sukharam Building on Kot Safil, while accepting the bribe from one Anilkumar Popatlal Pujari. Jha had confiscated Pujari8217;s bus on June 16 8212; after a police team seized four bottles of beer from the vehicle 8212; and was demanding money for its release.
The release said, Pujari, a resident of 220, Deendayal Society, Palanpur Patia and owner of Shivkrupa Travels, conducted tours to Nashik, Trimbakeshwar, Shirdi, Daman and other places. On one such trips, a bus GJ 5 U 3988 returned to the city at about 2 am on June 16 and halted at Ashaktashram Hospital. However, two cooks 8212; accompanying the tour 8212; were found to be carrying two bottles of beer each, when a team of Chowk Bazaar police raided the bus. Jha then confiscated the bus and took it to the police station.
Pujari, in his complaint to the ACB, said that the PSI had earlier demanded Rs 50,000 from him, but later settled for Rs 11,000, of which he had already paid the PSI Rs 9000. Jha, however, kept on demanding for the remaining sum, after which Pujari contacted the ACB, which laid a trap to arrest the PSI.
On Saturday night, Jha came to A K Enterprises at Sukharam Building to receive the amount and was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.
Though the ACB has initiated legal action against Jha, no disciplinary action had been taken against him by the city police until Sunday evening.
