PUNE, Feb 12: Bitten by the fortune bug, seven teenagers from Guruwar Peth in the heart of the city left home silently to make it big in Mumbai but stark reality forced them to pack their bags fast and return home.
It was Yogesh Pote (15), who took the initiative and suggested that he and his friends leave home in search of a job. And, the gullible friends concurred and embarked on the mission with just Rs 150.
They boarded the Pune-Mumbai passenger and reached the metropolis. But things did not work out according to their plan. And they decided to return, driven by guilt and nostalgia.
But the homecoming was far from smooth, as they bumped into police at Lonavla.
Two of them — Rahul Khade and Yogesh Pore — were subjected to a thorough beating by the police.
“It took just a few harsh words by the police for me to cook up the abduction story, in a sheer bid to escape from the clutches of the police,” says Yogesh Sutar.
“The policemen scolded us for nearly two-and-half hours before we couldmeet our parents at the Khadak police station. We were hungry and scared. Thinking that it would save us from the wrath of the policemen, Yogesh told them that a tempo driver had abducted us. But the cops saw through our lies,” says Rahul.
However, he regrets that he had to return without meeting his idol Akshay Kumar. In fact, he tried his best, but tracing Akshay’s address turned out to be a difficult proposition.
It is an episode over for the police. The parents are also silent. But the experience for the boys is sure to go a long way. At home, they sit wearing sulky expressions and refuse to communicate with anyone. However the experience served as an eye-opener. “I decided to run away to avoid appearing for the SSC examinations as I am weak in English and Mathematics.
However, it was worse. Now I will never run away. Instead, I will study well and try to score,” says Rahul.
