Chief coach Harendra Singh said 3-1 win over Great Britain on Friday has injected life into the team8217;s campaign following the debacle against South Korea in the Azlan Shah hockey tournament.
8220;This was a much improved performance as you could see,it8217;s put us back into the tournament,8221; said Harendra.
8220;The performance came through a much stable defence with Dhananjay Mahadik back after injuring almost half of Thursday8217;s game due to injury,8221; he said.
Harendra said the team8217;s confidence grew as goals came its way.
8220;The team showed more confidence all around,in the moves and switching the ball around. And more importantly,the penalty corner goals kept coming,8221; he said.
Harendra was all praise for young deep defender Rupinder Pal Singh,who scored a hat-trick with low penalty corner flicks that surprised the British goalkeeper.
8220;Rupinder is an intelligent player,not just in taking penalty corners but he8217;s a good denfender overall. He has the potential to become an exceptionally good penalty corner taker,and he showed it with the three goals today,8221; Harendra said.
8220;I8217;m not comparing Rupinder with India8217;s top penalty corner taker Sandeep Singh,8221; the coach said.
8220;He may not have got the opportunity in Sandeep8217;s presence,but took the chance that came his way.8221;
England8217;s coach Jason Lee,a former Olympian,said he was disappointed 8220;at the way the boys played Friday8221;.
8220;We expected tough matches like this and that8217;s the reason we are here playing in this tournament,but I did not expect some of my players not performing at all on Friday,8221; said Lee.
He said Britain8217;s show was nowhere near its performance against Malaysia Thursday,when they won 3-1.
8220;We have no specific target for this tournament other than playing quality matches,but the technical aspect of our game wasn8217;t good Friday,8221; he said.
