Poncha fails to qualify
Indian swimmer Rehan Poncha failed to qualify for the mens butterfly finals after finishing fourth in the heats on the first day of the competition in the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Saturday. Poncha clocked 2:03.96 in the five-man field to finish ninth overall.
Dewan bows out
Indias Dewan Singh Huidrom finished 11th and second from last in the mens Changquan event of the Wushu competition. Dewan started off well but his performance dipped as the competition progressed,managing scores of 2.52 and 1.55.
Jains six in vain
India gave a tough fight to China in the first half but lost steam in the second session to lose 21-41 in the Group A preliminary round handball match. For India,Prasad Jain scored six goals followed by Sachin Chaudhary who netted four.
Weightlifters struggle
Indians expectedly finished in the bottom half of the results chart in the weightlifting events on the first day of the competitions in the Asian Games. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Soniya Chanu finished fifth in women8217;s 48kg category while CWG bronze medallist,Sandhya Rani finished sixth. In men8217;s 56kg,V Srinivasa Rao and Sukhen Dey finished eighth and 10th respectively with below par performances.
Eves down Malaysia
India8217;s womens hockey squad secured a 4-0 win over Malaysia in their group A encounter on the first day of the field hockey event at the Asian Games in Guangzhou. Thokchom Chanchan Devi 26th minute,Deepika Thakur 43rd,Rani Rampal 53rd and Surinder Kaur 67th scored for India.
Kayaker in the dock
The Sports Ministry today asked the IOA to withdraw Vikram Singh Bhandari from the Kayaking and Canoeing team of the Indian Asian Games contingent. In a letter to IOA Secretary General Randhir Singh,the ministry said,The name of Vikram Singh Bhandari has not been recommended by the selection committee.
