MUMBAI, November 30: A one day strike will be organised by the Transport and Dock Workers Union in Mumbai port on December 11 in support of their long pending demands. Workers in all major ports in the country at at Jawaharlal Nehru port will participate in the strike This decision was announced by S R Kulkarni, president of the All India Port and Dock Workers8217; Federation. The union has demanded that all categories of workers be paid 25 per cent of their salaries as interim relief with effect from January 1998 pending the final settlement of the charter of demands. The union has also demanded that all the existing vacancies be filled. Contract workers should not be deployed in jobs of a permanent and perennial nature.
