CHANDIGARH, Feb 15: In a statement issued here today, the Sector 15 Welfare Society has deplored the deteriorating standards of sanitation in the Sector and has pointed out that the deputed staff routinely works at half-strength.

The society also called attention to the burgeoning number of phari-vendors, despite the creation of mini-booths for all genuine vendors in the Sector barely two years ago. It alleged that the allottees had sold the booths and reoccupied the open areas, re-creating the nuisance which the new market was intended to eliminate.

Describing the space designated for the weekly Apni Mandi as 8220;unsuitable and insufficient8221;, the society decried the filth that was left behind after the market closed and said that it attracted pigs. It also said that phari-vendors had infiltrated the market and defeated the very purpose of Apni Mandis. It was pointed out that the Sector 15 Community Centre, for years handed over to the UT Red Cross and recently resumed by the Municipal Corporation, should properly be handed over to the Sector Welfare Society so that citizens can avail of it. The society wants to carry out educational and recreational activities in the building but despite frequent requests, the Municipal Corporation has not agreed to release the building to the society.

The condition of roads in the Sector also came in for criticism, as did the lack of playground for the Sector8217;s children and failure to create pathways in the floral garden. Defective water meters, relocation of rickshaw-pullers and closer supervision of LPG supply agencies in the Sector was also demanded.
