When asked to describe the planning behind the current exhibition at NCPA8217;s Piramal Gallery, Jagdish Agarwal says that while photography in India is still seen as mostly a documentary medium, his hope is to make the everyday image be seen as an art form. Hence the concept of interactive photography8217; conceived by Agarwal and renowned photographer Ashwin Mehta that underlies the exhibition.

Staged to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Agarwal8217;s Dinodia Picture Agency, Kalbadevi, the exhibit challenges the visitor to use his imagination to evoke the texture and sensuality in the most common images. Unique techniques and angles are used to explore hidden mysteries in objects like sea-shells, caves, and doorways.

Agarwal hopes that the exhibit will inspire visitors to look at photography differently, and is holding a contest to devise captions appropriate to the photos. The winner will receive a framed print when the exhibition ends.

At Piramal Gallery, NCPA, Nariman Point. Till June 1997
