Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Sunday that recurring instances of collusion between police officers and anti-social elements in the state were a cause for concern and warned such officers of harsher consequences.

Speaking on the second day of a senior police officers’ conference held in Bengaluru, he said, “We will not tolerate officers sitting in stations and running illegal businesses. The department does not need such people. Some officers even attend rowdies’ birthday parties—should we remain silent? If officers don’t wake up, harsher consequences will follow. Strict action must be taken against those involved in illegal activities.”

Parameshwara also raised concerns about the misuse of social media platforms. Taking note of the circulation of posts inciting hatred, he said that such posts were leading to unrest and riots. “Strict legal action must be taken against offenders immediately, and such issues must be nipped in the bud,” he said.

On illegal immigrants, he cited reports claiming that thousands of illegal Bangladeshis are residing in the state and directed station-level police officers to verify the backgrounds of new residents in an area.

Noting cases of atrocities against the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, he noted that Karnataka was the first state to establish police stations under the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE). He said these stations should function more effectively.
“If a father kills his own daughter for marrying outside her caste, how can that be tolerated? To prevent such oppression against SC and ST communities, separate DCRE police stations have been created. They must instill confidence among victims that we stand with them,” he said.

Earlier, responding to media queries on demands to arrest Congress leader Rajeev Gowda, accused of abusing a woman officer over the putting up of a banner at Shidlaghatta in Chikkaballapur district, the minister said he was absconding and would be arrested soon.
