Haryana Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Sunday said that senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will arrive in Kurukshetra on January 21 to address the district party presidents from Haryana and Uttarakhand.

The Congress has organised a training programme aimed at strengthening its organisation in both states, with 33 district presidents from Haryana and 27 from Uttarakhand participating in sessions scheduled from January 13 to 22.

While addressing the Haryana district presidents, Hooda outlined the pressing issues that he believes must be taken to the people, including unemployment, organised crime, drug abuse, migration, alleged neglect of farmers, and the continued alleged marginalisation of poor and SC-OBC communities. He accused the BJP-led state government of failing to deliver on its promises and of neglecting development in Haryana.

“In 11 years of rule, the BJP has not set up a single new medical college, major industry, university, railway line, metro line, or IIT, nor has it managed to attract significant investment. Yet, the state’s debt has soared from ₹60,000 crore accumulated between 1966 and 2014 to more than ₹5 lakh crore in just 11 years,” he remarked.

Referring to the BJP’s promise to double farmers’ income by 2022, Hooda claimed that instead of raising earnings, it has only increased costs. “The government has betrayed women under the Ladli Lakshmi Yojana. During elections, the BJP promised ₹2,100 per month to all women, but now the scheme benefits only a restricted group,” he said.

He alleged that criminal networks are flourishing unchecked, leaving ordinary citizens in a state of insecurity, with more than 80 gangs currently active in Haryana.

Referring to the Punjab Kesari Group’s claim of a “targeted witch-hunt” by the Punjab government, Hooda expressed concern over attempts to intimidate a respected media institution through official agencies. “The media is the fourth pillar of democracy, and any move to silence independent journalism undermines the democratic framework,” he asserted.
