CHANDIGARH, Dec 2: The PGI has extended the age of retirement of all its employees from 58 years to 60 years with effect from November 30.Except for the medical and non-medical teaching staff and the Group D employees, who are already retiring at 60 years of age, the retirement age has been extended to all others. With the notification being issued, the PGI Regulations have been amended after more than six decades in this regard. The extension of retirement age had been recommended by the Fifth Central Pay Commission and it came into effect in the central government offices from May 31. Sources in the PGI point out that it took more than six months of administrative delay to bring the notification into effect in an autonomous body like PGI. In these six months nearly 20 employees of PGI have reached the retirement age of 58 years. These employees, mainly C grade, were given an option to continue their services "at their own risk", keeping in view the matter of extension of retirement age being pursued at higher levels. All the employees continued with their service and none of them opted for retirement. However, the matter of their salaries for these six months that they served is yet to be decided, sources add.
