
NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 20: A bill to amend the Patents Act was introduced in Rajya Sabha today after an assurance by Information Technology minister Pramod Mahajan that the government would have no hesitation in referring the bill to a select committee if members so desired.
The Patents (Second Amendment) Bill, 1999, was introduced by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Dr Raman Singh to meet certain WTO obligations under the trade related aspects of intellectual property rights (TRIPS) agreement.
The Bill provides for safeguards for protection of public interests, national security, bio-diversity and traditional knowledge.
