BHUBANESWAR: The Janata Dal, CPI and CPM on Sunday alleged that split in JD had been quot;engineeredquot; by the Congress Government in Orissa by quot;blackmailingquot; some of its former leaders on the 1992 hooch tragedy. Leaders of the three parties told a press conference, instead of acting on the judicial commission report into the Cuttack hooch tragedy the Government kept the quot;matter hanging for over two years and utilised it to break the Dal before the pollsquot;.

Uniform civil code

SHIMOGA: The BJP on Sunday reiterated its resolve to bring in a uniform civil code in the country, saying it was not anti-Muslim. Kicking off the party8217;s election campaign in Karnataka, BJP chief L K Advani said his party, if voted to power, would pass the women8217;s reservation bill this year itself to provide 33 per cent representation for them in Parliament and State Assemblies.

AGARTALA: For the first time, a triangular contest would be seen in the February 16 assembly elections in Tripura between the ruling CPM-led Left Front, Cong-TUJS alliance and the BJP. The CPM8217;s strength has been weakened by the absence of CM Dasaratha Deb and ex-CM Nripen Chakraborty for the campaigning.
